Improve cancer survivorship care

Eating healthy, being active, and maintaining a healthy body weight may lower risk of cancer recurrence. Cancer survivors, doctors, and researchers are working to optimize a program to help adults with cancer eat well and be active.

Improve cancer survivorship care

Participating in this study helps researchers determine which tools are most useful for cancer survivors trying to improve their nutrition, physical activity and/or lose weight. We know nutrition and physical activity are important for our health, but it is hard to make changes. Our goal is to figure out how we can help cancer survivors be as healthy as possible.

Who is part of the Tools To Be Fit study?

People 18 years of age or older who have been diagnosed with one of the following cancers: bladder, breast, colon, endometrial, kidney (renal cell carcinoma), ovarian, prostate, rectal; and plan to reside in the United States during the study.

How it works

We are testing different tools for helping people make changes to their nutrition and physical activity, such as text messaging, coaching, activity trackers, and mobile apps. If you participate, you will receive a personalized report at the start of the study and then be assigned to different combinations of the tools for approximately 1 year. We will ask you to complete surveys on your background and health at the start of the study and update your health information a few times throughout the study.

FAQs

Click here to take a survey to determine if you are eligible. After completing the survey, you will be asked to read and sign a consent form indicating that you understand what the study asks you to do. Once our team receives your consent form, we may contact your doctor to confirm your eligibility. A member of our research team will then reach out to you to let you know if you are eligible to participate and answer any questions you may have. You can contact us at toolstobefit@ucsf.edu any time.

You will be asked to complete a set of questionnaires and wear an accelerometer on your wrist for one week to measure your usual physical activity. You will also be asked to go to a lab convenient to you to have your height, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure measured and a blood sample drawn. After you complete these steps, you will be assigned to receive up to four tools to help you improve your nutrition and physical activity and lose weight (if that is your goal) for about a year. We will ask you to complete a set of surveys four more times and wear the accelerometer on your wrist two more times over the course of the year to check on how you are doing. At the end of the year, you will be asked to go back to a lab near you to measure your weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure and give a blood sample. You can withdraw at any time by emailing the study team.

Yes, you need to have a smartphone (iPhone or Android) to take part in this study.

You will be in the study for about one year.

Completing the study surveys can take up to 90 minutes at the start, middle, and end of the study, but you don’t have to complete them all at once. You can save and return to complete them over the course of a week or two. The body size measurements and blood sample take about 5-10 minutes to complete at the start and end of the study (not counting travel time to the lab of your choice). Wearing the accelerometer takes 1 week, but you can go about your usual activities while wearing it. If you are assigned to receive health coaching, you will receive 15 coaching sessions by video conference or phone during the study.

Participants will receive up to $50 and a physical activity tracker by the end of the study.
